I was born in San Francisco, pretty close to Ocean Beach (at the UCSF Medical Center. I knew a girl who was born a year and a day after me, in the UCSF Medical Center gift shop, but I digress), and I was always fascinated by the area, and by how recently Golden Gate Park was created. There’s a wonderful bit in Simon Winchester’s book A Crack in the Edge of the World: America and the Great California Earthquake of 1906 about 4 eye-witness accounts of the 1906 earthquake, including one man who was taking his daily swim here during the quake. Considering how dangerous a beach it can be on a normal day, I am VERY impressed by this fellow! Also, I like the Police.
About the Author
Molly Demeter Sokolow Hayden (or Modemeter, for obvious reasons of length) grew up surrounded by her father’s comic book collection, sometimes literally. She fell in love with Will Eisner’s Spirit at an inappropriately young age and wishes she could draw like Jaime Hernandez. She lives in Portland, Oregon with her husband, her daughter, and her cat, and sneaks down to her drawing table whenever she can.
