Much of hell is based on the somewhat haphazard set up of the studios in my alma mater, CalArts (at least they were haphazard in 1987). I once wandered through an art school in Beijing, and immediately felt right at home. The smells, the extremely bare-bones walls and lack of real furniture reminded me strongly of the very expensive shanty-town we art students called home (not to mention the sub-level. Oh, and I actually took welding, briefly, in high school (my high school lacked any real art classes, so I took welding and drafting, and was pretty much the only girl in both classes).
